How Long Do Temporary Emails Last?
Temporary email addresses are designed to expire — that's what makes them useful. The moment an address stops existing, any marketing, spam, or tracking tied to it stops with it. But the question of how long they last varies by service, and knowing your options matters when you need an address to outlast a longer process.
How Long FastTempMail Addresses Last
By default, a FastTempMail address is active for 6 hours from the moment it's generated.
Six hours is long enough for the vast majority of use cases: you receive a verification email, confirm a signup, download a file, or test a registration flow — and the address expires before any follow-up marketing can arrive.
After 6 hours, the address is permanently deleted along with every message it received. There's no archive, no recovery, and no way to access it again. That's intentional.
Can You Extend the Expiration Time?
Yes. FastTempMail lets you set a custom expiry duration from 1 hour to 72 hours (3 days) — useful when you need an address to stay active across a longer process.
To change the expiry, open the settings panel in the app (the gear icon in the bottom-right of the inbox card) and enter your preferred duration in hours. You can update this at any time while the address is still active.
Common reasons to extend:
- You're waiting for a delayed email (transactional emails from some services take hours to arrive)
- You're in a multi-step verification process that spans a day
- You're testing an onboarding sequence that sends emails over several days
- You want the address available across a work session without regenerating it
Managing Multiple Sessions
FastTempMail supports up to three simultaneous inboxes, each with its own address and independent expiry timer. You can run them in parallel and switch between them using the tab bar at the top of the inbox.
This is useful when you're signing up on multiple sites at the same time, or when you want a separate address for each stage of a test.
What Happens When an Address Expires?
When an address expires:
- The address is deleted from the server
- All emails it received are permanently removed
- There's no way to recover the address or its messages
- Any emails sent to it after expiry will bounce
If you have unread emails you want to keep, copy the content before the timer runs out. There's no export feature — the deletion is permanent by design.
How FastTempMail Compares to Other Services
| Service | Default Lifespan | Extendable? |
|---|---|---|
| FastTempMail | 6 hours | Yes, up to 3 days |
| 10 Minute Mail | 10 minutes | Limited |
| Guerrilla Mail | 1 hour | No |
| YOPmail | Permanent | N/A (never expires) |
| Mailinator | Permanent (public) | N/A |
Permanent inboxes like YOPmail and Mailinator never expire — but they're also public, meaning anyone can read your emails if they know the address. FastTempMail inboxes are private and encrypted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse a FastTempMail address after it expires? No. Once an address expires, it's gone permanently. You can generate a new address with the same prefix if you want a similar name, but it will be a different inbox with no connection to the previous one.
What if I need the address for more than 3 days? If you need something longer than 3 days, you should use a real email address — either your primary one or a dedicated secondary account. Temporary email is for short-to-medium term use; for ongoing relationships, a permanent address is more appropriate.
Does the timer reset if I receive an email? No. The expiry timer is based on when the address was created, not when it last received mail. Extending the duration manually through settings is the only way to keep it active longer.
